Prisha and her team at a drive with Thrift for Good

My journey into the world of community service is a rollercoaster filled with twists and turns. Growing up, I never really thought of changing the world at the age of 14 but rather was contented with a few hours spent cleaning beaches or donating food. It was my first field visit hat initiated a purpose, a reason of sorts for me.

During my 3-week stay in Vadodara, Gujarat with the help of the TribesforGOOD team, I was able to join Neev Shikshan Sanstha as a volunteer to conduct activities such as circle time, read aloud as well as art as an expression in underdeveloped schools run by non-profits for students of Kg1-Grade 2. This broadened my understanding of how lucky I am to have the luxury of Education and from there on I have been valuing it even more. This is the place where it all changed for me.

Looking at the faces during my classes inspired me to devote myself more to this service. I still vividly remember, that on my first field visit to one of the schools I faced many challenges due to the language barrier between me and the students and was demotivated. However, I saw this as an opportunity to improve my skills, and with the support of my wonderful team at the organization, I was able to overcome this obstacle. Looking at the student’s excitement and enthusiasm during circle time, their captivated faces while reading the stories, and their adorable goodbyes during my departure taught me the true meaning of determination and resilience. I aspire to dedicate my time to social work and devote myself to community service.

Moving on, I joined TribesforGOOD to work towards using my skills in design innovation to help people however, my experience turned out to be much different. Designing brand labels for Aftertaste India, conducting online workshops to educate the women artists about Canva and google as well as developing an international marketing strategy truly broadened my views on serving the community.

Being someone who loves recycling and sustainable initiatives, I then marched on and collaborated with Thrift for good which is a non-profit organization that works towards fuelling meaningful projects by reselling donated items. I spent my time sorting donated clothes at their main branch and helping sell clothes at the flea markets. This was a one-of-a-kind experience as it opened my eyes to the need that a community can have and how as individuals, we can strive to contribute towards it.

Furthermore, I collaborated with the Emirates Environmental group to organize collection drives for recyclable materials such as papers and books. The Emirates Environmental Group is a non-governmental organization dedicated to environmental preservation which focuses on educating and inspiring future generations for sustainable development. During these drives, I collected nearly 150 kgs of paper waste. However, what truly brought me joy were those grateful faces of those I served as I drove from house to house, allowing them to be a part of a wonderful cause.

I believe this is just the beginning, these experiences have instilled in me the passion to work for the betterment of the community and I will strive towards it. Yes, there were challenges along the way, as managing academics and activities was never easy but the satisfaction you get from those happy faces is priceless.
